Rita Watson: Sci-fi lovers try dating at light speed Dec 1
If there was a Sci-Fi Speed Dating match made at the recent Rhode Island Comic Con, the lovers are keeping it quiet. At Pre-Dating Speed Dating Providence, women are being wait-listed for the next December event, but not so at Comic Con where men and women were equally distributed. Was there a match? The only person talking is Sarah Georgiou from Baltimore, Maryland. “I can’t say for sure, but Batman seemed to be making eyes at a young lady in faux mink and pearls.”
Georgiou added, “When I first participated in Sci-Fi Speed Dating in New York, I have to admit I was really nervous and scared that none of the guys in my session would choose me. It turned out to be really fun and I met a lot of respectable, nice guys, but lived too far away.
“Then Sci-Fi Speed Dating came to Awesome Con 2013 hosted in Washington, DC and I tried it again,” she said. “I ended up having another great session meeting with a few guys that I still keep in contact with. But I also had a chance to talk to the creator of it all Ryan Glitch, and he invited me to work with him in Rhode Island. I had a blast helping fellow nerdy, hopeless romantics like us find love in a safe and enjoyable environment. I really loved getting the chance to run a panel here. It has kind of been like a dream come true.”
Georgiou, dressed as Harley Quinn from Batman, said that many of the people with whom she spoke when they signed up were as apprehensive as she was at her first event. However, there was one universal theme expressed, “We get a chance to meet people who share our Sci-Fi interests.”
When the match moment arrived, Ryan Glitch, the colorful organizer, immediately put women at ease by suggesting discreet signals that women might use if at any time during their meeting they felt uncomfortable. He was like the catcher behind home plate.
How successful is Sci Fi Speed Dating? Glitch said, “I have been doing this for four years. And in that time we have had six marriages, 19 engagements, 102 couples dating seriously, and two babies. I have not personally married anyone, but have been to some of the weddings. Rhode Island was a great show for us, with good people. I hope we get to come back!
From Wall Street executives — who hire high priced dating consultants — to Comic Con and Speed Dating Providence, in today’s social networking society men and woman of all ages seem to be looking for love.
