Truth to tell, it is almost impossible to change a man. Inspired by my article appearing next week in the Thrive section of the Providence Journal on the Stress in America survey, I wrote this piece last night for my Psychology Today column. Change Your Perception, Not Your Man.
It seems that we are reporting less stress even though the key stressors in this country remain according to the American Psychological Association survey.
So I reasoned, if we can change our perception of stress, perhaps we can change our perception of the man who leaves his briefcase on the dining room table — Grrrrr– or who says he’ll call and then forgets. And then the one who flirts with your girlfriend and reasons, “I was just trying to make her feel good.” Let’s not forget the “friends with benefits” guy who says, “I’m just not loyal.”
If all else fails — even the power of positive reinforcement — keep in mind the words of some wise woman somewhere who said: “If you can train a seal, you can train a man.”
Have a look. And if you have an answer, please leave it in the comment section of Change Your Perception, Not Your Man.
